Like Concrete Blonde, Steve Earle and The Cult, Supertramp were always wildly (incongruously?) popular in Canada. So news of an all-star tribute to the British classic rockers featuring current/former members of Yes, XTC, Asia, the Doors, King Crimson, Deep Purple, Mr. Mister, Starship and – believe it or not – other marquee musicians comes as very good news.

Cleopatra Records will release Songs of the Century: An All-Star Tribute to Supertramp on August 14.The album features the “All-Star Prog Collective,” which is comprised of members of Yes, Asia and XTC, and the above-mentioned others putting their spin on 11 classics by the band arguably best known for the headphone-friendly, gazillion-selling 1979 album Breakfast in America.

Useless but nifty trivia: In France, Breakfast in America is the biggest selling English language album of all time, and the third biggest seller overall, so I guess news of a forthcoming covers disc will be good news there as well. Oui oui c'est bon!

Anyway, as Ultimate Classic Rock reports, the album is the brainchild of former Yes guitarist Billy Sherwood, who created the All-Star Prog Collective and also produced two Pink Floyd tribute albums. “Supertramp is a great band,” he’s quoted as saying. “They’ve written so many hits that you can’t even count them all.”

Well, we could try… complete track listing is below. As fans know, Supertramp was formed in England in 1969 and quickly established itself as a thinking prog-rock fan’s pop band, thanks in large part to the melodic sensibilities of keyboardist/singer Roger Hodgson.

Conveniently, Hodgson - who left the band in 1983 - begins a North American tour this Sunday (August 5) that runs through November. Click here for dates.
