Depending on your POV, this is either great news (for rock fans) or terrible news (for reality TV fans).

On the very day Jennifer Lopez mused publicly about throwing in the towel on her American Idol judging gig, Aerosmith screamer Steven Tyler has actually done it, saying he won’t return for a third season on the wildly popular TV talent show so he can focus on his band instead.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new video from Aerosmith, which itself came with an updated release date for the Boston band’s hotly anticipated new album. Wow, so much Aerosmith action suddenly.

In a typically wooly statement clearly written by the man himself, Tyler says, “After some long……hard……thoughts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit,” he says, conjuring that infamous scene from the movie Fatal Attraction.

“I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back — but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious a--.”

Well, yeah! It’s about time Aerosmith collected its focus. Also, can’t wait to see who is next in the queue for the Idol gig. (Charlie Sheen? Tee hee!) Tyler surprised many fans – and seriously peeved longtime partner, guitarist Joe Perry - when he abruptly (and apparently secretly) joined Idol two years ago, something not even a spike in record sales could really mollify for his bandmates.

With Aerosmith set to release their new album Music from Another Dimension on November 6, the time seemed right to choose sides. It seems Tyler is doing so with no regrets: “Idol was over-the-top fun,” he says, “and I loved every minute of it…Now it’s time to bring rock back.”
