Oh to be rich and able to indulge one’s passion to the max. How else to explain a poster advertising an early gig by the Beatles at Liverpool’s Cavern Club yesterday selling at Christie’s auction house in London for a staggering of $42,515.
According to whatsellsbest.com, the hand-painted poster, which measures 20″ x 30,” promotes the November 30, 1962 show by the Fab Four at the small basement club on Mathew Street. Keeners will note the band released their first single, ‘Love Me Do’ nearly two months earlier.
Ultimate Classic Rock tells us they played two sets that afternoon, at 12:20 pm and 1:40 pm which seems pretty odd but maybe more conventional for the era. Anyway, in between, at 1:00PM, was Pete MacLaine and the Dakotas.
Eventually, the Dakotas found a new lead singer, Billy J. Kramer, and had several hits between 1963 and 1965, some of which were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney or first given to the Beatles.
The site adds, “The Beatles performed 292 shows at the Cavern between February 1961 and August 1963. It was where future manager Brian Epstein first saw the band and Ringo Starr made his debut as their drummer. The Cavern closed down in 1973 and was partly demolished to make way for Liverpool’s underground train system.
“However, a replica of the club was built using the rest of the original site in 1984, and it is still in use as a live music venue. In 1999, Paul McCartney played there for the first time since 1963 on his ‘Run Devil Run’ Tour. Its place in Beatles history makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Liverpool.”
Quite so. Wouldn't it be interesting if it was revealed that the buyer was one of the surviving Beatles? Guess we'll never know.
A rock star plays 3 chords in front of 3 thousand people and a jazz man plays 3 thousand chords in front of 3 people and who gets rich? Nothing has changed. I only liked Ringo and George in this band while Paul and John just irritated me.
