“Van Halen on Tour. First tickets on sale January 10.” And with that, the countdown officially begins.

Van Halen posted a two-minute teaser video on its website yesterday (see below) containing black and white footage of an exuberant David Lee Roth hamming it up alongside guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and kiddo bassist Wolfgang Van Halen.

As classic songs “Shout,” “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher” play in the background, a crawl at the bottom reads: “Van Halen on tour 2012. First tickets on sale January 10.”

No other information is available, but the tenor of the message is consistent with how the more-or-less reformed band (we miss you, Michael Anthony) has been communicating with its fans recently: cryptically and very much at its own pace.

Still, the message is welcome news and at least indicates SOMETHING is brewing over at VH HQ. As noted by Australia’s Noise 11, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea immediately took to his Twitter account upon seeing the video, tweeting: “alright van halen doing a tour with david lee roth …..yeeeeah muthafukkas.”

The group – featuring original singer David Lee Roth - recently signed a deal with Interscope and is expected to release an album of new material at some point in 2012, followed by a world tour. The band's last studio album was 1998’s (!) Van Halen III with former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone. Their last with DLR was 1984’s 1984 and their last tour (also with DLR) was in 2007.

So yeah... they’re kind of due.
